The present lot depicts St. Leonard of Noblac, a 6th century Frankish saint and patron saint of prisoners. In his left hand he holds a chain terminating in a manacle. According to legend, prisoners who invoked St Leonard saw their chains break before their eyes. This panel may have originated from the Church of St. Leonard, Bauerbach Bavaria, Germany.
