Catalogue Note

Donated by Tom Dixon.

Innovation is one of the preeminent qualities celebrated in this auction, and London-based Tom Dixon is among the most innovative designers working today. Since founding his firm in 2002, Dixon has built a worldwide reputation for embracing new digital technologies and manufacturing methods to bold effects. His "Punch XL" shade, created especially for the (RED) Auction in partnership with Trumpf Inc., one of the world's leading sheet-metal fabricators, is a prototype for a new series of bespoke aluminium shades that are infinitely customisable - the geometric pattern and the size of each shade is unique. "Punch XL" has 12 panels, 30 ribs and 20 nodes; the nodes serve as joints between the ribs, which together create the skeleton of the giant ball. Decorative panels ar then fastened to the skeleton to produce the ball, filtering light to create brilliant patterns on the walls, ceiling and floors.
