Catalogue Note
Jony and Marc wanted contemporary fashion to be represented in the auction, and no couturier working today better embodies the perfect marriage of art, creativity and craftsmanship than Azzedine Alaïa. Born in Tunisia and based in Paris, Alaïa - a two-time winner of France's Oscars de la Mode - is beloved by a list of devoted clientele whose names have included legendary style setters Cécile de Rothschild, Louis de Vilmorin, Greta Garbo and Bettina Graziani through such supermodels as Stephanie Seymour, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington Burns. Many museums have recognised his genius, awarding him exhibitions in prestigious venues ranging from the Guggenheim and Groninger Museums to the Musée Galliera in Paris. A great friend of Marc, Alaïa creates unique garments using his mastery of traditional craftsmanship joined to technologically modern construction techniques and materials, an approach that brings him into alignment with many of the industrial designers represented here. This 2011 Couture Collection dress, a quintessentially modern blend of viscose, polyester and polyamide, was selected by Jony and Marc especially for the (RED) Auction.
