Condition
The photographs are very bad. These are very fine and crisp casts, very good in all details and a warm brown patina. Some very minor wear to the surface consistent with age and handling, and some minor surface dirt in the crevisses. A few fine hairline cracks to the surface and minor lacks to the edges of the wooden base. Very attractive bronzes which should be recommended.

Catalogue Note
L'histoire d'Hippomène et Atalante trouve ses origines dans les Métamorphoses d'Ovide (X, 681-704) : Hippomène épousera Atalante s'il remporte la course contre elle, et devra mourir s'il perd. La jeune fille est plus rapide, mais Hippomène pose trois pommes sur son chemin qu'il jette derrière lui dès qu'Atalante le dépasse. Celle-ci s'arrête pour ramasser les pommes, permettant à Hippomène de remporter la course.
C'est en 1704 que Louis XIV commande les Quatre Coureurs pour le parc de Marly, (aujourd'hui tous conservés au Louvre), dont Hippomène par Guillaume Ier Coustou (1677-1746) pour faire pendant à Atalante (inv.no MR 1804) de Pierre Lepautre (1659/66-1744), et Daphné de Guillaume Ier Coustou (MR 1807) en paire avec Apollon (MR 1805) de Nicolas Coustou (1658-1733). Les marbres furent placés en 1706 dans le bosquet du couchant, puis au centre des bassins des Carpes à Marly.
