Description

  • cultured pearl, sapphire, diamond, metal
The brooch centring on a baroque cultured pearl of iridescent aubergine tint, encircled within lines of millegrain-set circular- and single-cut diamonds, and calibré-cut sapphires, to a similarly set pendant of ribbon design; the unmounted cushion-shaped diamond weighing 17.13 carats.

Condition

The colour of the unmounted diamond is not as yellow as appears in the catalogue. Loose diamond measuring approximately 16.60 x 14.50 x 9.80 mm, weighing 17.12 carats, in our experts' opinion of yellow tint, VS2-SI1 clarity, with minor nicks, chips and abrasion, one chip at girdle on pavilion side. The baroque cultured pearl of grey body colour with strong blue, lavender and green overtones, many growth marks and blemishes, medium lustre. Sapphires well matched in colour. Diamonds estimated to weigh a total of approximately 1.50 carats, on average of G-I colour and VS-SI clarity, as gauged and graded in mounting. Normal signs of wear to the metal, scratches consistent with use and age, minor solder marks, brooch fitting and pendant formerly detachable, now soldered in place. Gross weight of brooch in current state approximately 18 grams. Accompanied by original design for the modified brooch, numbered 22.

Catalogue Note

In April 1972, the cushion-shaped diamond weighing 17.13 carats was removed from the centre of the brooch and replaced with the cultured pearl, to make it a more suitable jewel for every-day wear. The original design for the modified brooch accompanies this lot.
