A gold David statuette in the form of Donatello's fifteenth century sculpture, resting upon a carved malachite block with a plaque inscribed, 'the David di Donatello award given in 1955-56 to Gina Lollobrigida for her role as best actress in the film Beautiful but Dangerous' [trans]., signed Bulgari, case by Bulgari, base measuring approximately 80 x 75mm, height 27mm.

Condition

Signed Bulgari to gold statuette and inscribed 750 for 18 carat gold. Malachite block formed from two triangular pieces of malachite; malachite with typical banding and surface inclusions, evidence of repair from a chip to the front top edge of the block. Minor cracks inside of right leg above knee and at the base of the statuette, two small fissures on the sword. Signs of little wear to the metal. In good condition. Bulgari Vintage Collection, inv. 6697.

Catalogue Note

Equivalent to The Oscars, the David di Donatello award is presented each year for cinematic performances and production by l'Accademia del Cinema Italiano. First presented in 1955, the trophy was produced by Bulgari from 1956 to 1960. A first edition trophy, this award was presented to Gina Lollobrigida for her best actress role in the film Beautiful but Dangerous. Other notable persons having received the award include Federico Fellini, Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe for best foreign actress.
