Tempera on canvasboard. The picture surface is in generally good condition aside from some minor surface dirt. Under UV, some areas of the work fluoresce, likely due to the artist's methods and materials.

The title refers to Edgar Allan Poe's poem The City in the Sea. A final version of the poem was published in 1845, but earlier versions were published as The Doomed City and The City of Sin.
