Condition

This painting on board is stable and un-reinforced on its reverse. The paint layer is cleaned and retouched. Utrillo is an eccentric and slightly unpredictable artist; his technique is unique. This picture shows fairly extensive retouches in the sky and in the foreground. While there may be some areas that require some retouches, what can be seen under ultraviolet light at present are retouches that do not reflect the condition of the work. It is strongly recommended that the work be cleaned and retouched only where necessary. One needs to be aware that Utrillo is an Expressionist at heart, and the areas of paint that have been "tidied up" should reflect his eccentric technique. A great deal less retouching would be required if the work were re-examined. The above condition report has been prepared by Simon Parkes, an independent conservator who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
