Condition

With scattered restored breaks, some abrasions and chips. most visible restored break to neck of one figure with restoration now starting to seperate and cracking; recommend restoring. Some restored losses, including finger of one lady. Ormolu with some oxidation and rubbing.

Catalogue Note

Candelabra of this type, with Vestal virgins holding the candlearms, are usually related to the oeuvre of late eighteenth-century Roman craftsmen such as Giuseppe Valadier and Francesco Righetti. A pair of candelabra with such female figures signed by Righetti and dated 1790 was sold from the collection of Lt. Col. the Rt. Hon. Lord Burnham, Christie's house sale, Hall Barn, Buckinghamshire, September 29, 1969, lot 92. A comparable pair of Italian white marble candelabra with Vestal figures in seated position was sold Christie's London, December 12, 2002, lot 65. A pair of candelabra with similar standing maidens was sold from the collection of Akram Ojjeh, Christie's Monaco, December 11-12, 1999, lot 9.
