Condition

Laid down. The sheet is irregular and is torn lower left, also along right margin (these areas have been made up with another sheet of paper). There is a brown stain upper right, just in line with the prophet's hand resting on his face. There is a small darker brown ink stain at the upper left margin. There is a small nick in the paper upper left. Some surface dirt. Overall pen and ink remain vibrant and image still strong.

Catalogue Note

Stylistically this can be compared with a sheet of studies of Prophets at Windsor.

The facial features and the manner in which the Prophet's head has been depicted here can also be compared with other pen and ink studies of a bearded man in Luini's drawing, Studies of the head of a bearded man and figures for a Lamentation, sold, London, Sotheby's, 2 July 1997, lot 43.
