8vo, first edition, six volumes expanded to eight, navy blue cloth stamped in gilt, the final four volumes interleaved with about 190 autograph letters by eminent Victorians laid down, including: Disraeli (14 letters and notes, some signed, mostly 1870s); other politicians, notably a substantial series of letters and political memoranda by Stafford Northcote (including memoranda on the Suez Canal purchase and the Battle of Islandlwana), Gladstone (4), 14th Earl of Derby (3), 15th Earl of Derby (series, often signed "D"), Gathorne Hardy (series), Salisbury, Arthur Balfour, Charles Dilke, and the American Ambassador Charles Francis Adams (printed circular letter signed on the assassination of Lincoln, 2 May 1865); men of letters including Matthew Arnold and J.A. Froude; the naval inventor Cowper P. Coles; the explorer Sir Samuel White Baker; many bishops and clergymen including Cardinal Manning (2) and E.B. Pusey (2); a series of 11 photographic portraits of politicians; also an explanatory typescript note on the source of the letters signed by Sir John Kempe, 6 pages, hinges cracked, endpapers offset and foxed, top edges darkened, spines sunned and worn, one or two letters loose

These volumes were assembled by Sir John Arrow Kempe (1846-1928), a civil servant in the Treasury who served as Assistant Private Secretary to Disraeli in 1868, Private Secretary to successive Chancellors of the Exchequer (1874–81), and rose to become Comptroller and Auditor-General.
