Description

  • Zhang Daqian (Chang Dai-chien, 1899-1983)
  • SHIMMERING LAKE AND MOUNTAIN COLOURS
  • ink and colour on paper, hanging scroll, 1949
with four seals of the artist. Titleslip by Kao Ling-mei

Inscription:
Trees in the wooded plain, sparse and dense; Huts in the distant village, two and three.
East winds blow when the sun sets on the mead; Most captivating are the willow catkins by the water.
Painted on the shangyuan day (Lantern Festival) of the jichou year at Zaishan Lou, Hong Kong island, Chang Yuan Dai-chien from Shu.

The thought of lakes and mountains suddenly filled my mind. I picked up my brush to give vent to my feelings.
The colour of mountains, the light of lakes and the tranquility of woods and valleys are not easily given away by Heaven.
People trapped in the hustle and bustle of mundane life are unworthy of such knowledge, Dai-chien Jushi.
