Catalogue Note

The rediscovery of a lost painting (study).

The drawing is a preparatory study for "Le coup de Grace," a painting which was part of a selection for an aborted project for a book in 1950. Quoting D. Sylvester, the "work has left no futher trace, and we cannot be sure whether it was an oil or a gouache, or if it was subsequently retitled."

The study was part of a set of sketches drawn in the summer of 1946, and offered by Magritte to Suzi Gablik in order to support her and help her in the writing of a monograph on the artist and the concept of "art in process". The sketchbook, titled "Le Problème du Fantôme" is primarily concerned with one main subject (with exceptions). This drawing is one of these exceptions, which is probably why it was removed from it.
