Catalogue Note

Chen Danqing’s epochal work Tibetan Series became an instant success in 1980, and the sensation it caused at that time has been unsurpassed by any Chinese artists hitherto. Tibetan Series drew the curtain on the influence of Russia on Chinese oil painting since 1949. Chen Danqing was fascinated by rural Tibetan life, which serves as the main subject of his early creative output. The painting Shepherdess, executed in 1988 as an extension of the artists’ decade-long interest in the Tibetan theme, shows . four shepherdesses facing different directions under an endless blue sky. This wonderfully evocative imagery gives the viewer a sense of existence out on the Tibetan grasslands, a livelihood that has endured forforthousands of years. Chen uses his skillful techniques to create a mystic, timeless atmosphere, endowing this work with enormous emotive power and potency. Shepherdess represents the best of Chen’s later work during this period.
