Catalogue Note

Le volume majestueux de la tête formant le réceptacle exalte la virtuosité du traitement naturaliste. Concourant, dans le royaume Kuba, au prestige de l'artiste et de son commanditaire, cette coupe à vin de palme se distingue par la très grande sensibilité de la sculpture, magnifiée par un décor parsemé de têtes de clous en cuivre et par les nuances de la patine profonde. Voir Binkley & Darish (Kuba, 2009, p. 48 et 125) pour une coupe très comparable dans la collection Adele et Donald Hall, "représentative de la sculpture sur bois [Kuba] du XIXe siècle à son plus haut niveau".
