Catalogue Note

"There are paintings that we look at, that we are so used to, having known them for many years, without noticing their strangeness, their inexplicableness, their irrationality. And however it is this that is the source of their prodigy, their poetry. The less a scene by Chagall reminds us of a scene from contemporary life (...), the less we can draw a common meaning from its elements, the less these seem to be a premise for that, or the reverse. The precision of the painter's composition lies in his freedom."

Extract from "Chagall l’admirable" by Louis Aragon, Derrière le miroir, no. 198, mai 1972
