the jade shaped as a heart with a slightly domed cover, the sides finely carved in relief with leafy flowerheads and buds, the cover decorated in the kundan technique with large floral blossoms and colourful stones

Catalogue Note

A similar jade heart-shaped box, but with an openwork design, is now in the British Museum (inv. no. 1880.330), and attributed to the seventeenth century. Another similar box, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no.1626-1852), is dated to circa 1850, attesting to the enduring popularity of this shape and style.
