Catalogue Note

In this imaginary portrait of the famous ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan is shown in an uncharacteristically sensuous and intimate scene, kneeling on a bed gently undressing his mistress. On the table behind are two books and a European carriage clock.

For fifteen years the painting was in the collection of the late Ismail Merchant (1936-2005), the famous film producer, until his collection was sold in 2009.
