Description

  • A Marble Pillar, Roman Imperial

  • Height 39 5/8 in. 100.6 cm.
in Neo-Attic style, slightly tapering, carved on one side in low relief with a flowering acanthus plant, and on the other side in higher relief with a herm of Silenus surmounted by two female season personifications each in the form of a woman wearing a chiton and himation and walking to left with billowing drapery, Summer holding a garland in one hand and sheaves of wheat in the other, Autumn carrying pomegranates and bunches of grapes in the fold of her garment, each of the short sides decorated with a thyrsos.

Condition

As shown and described, surface of acanthus motif pristine, other surfaces seem to have been coated with a protective layer which has darkened and discolored over time, hole drilled near top of acanthus motif as shown, probably for modern mounting of pillar, edges adjacent to acanthus motif on both narrow sides scuffed with red paint, scattered chips and abrasions, chips particularly to edges, small area at lower left corner of side with season relief and adjacent section of narrow side repaired, including approximately half of the base of the herm.

There is an old faded Italian inscription in pencil on the herm shaft.
