  • the first initialed F RL and dated 1849 on the back
  • wood, glass
  • heights 11 in. and 17 1/2 in.
  • 28 cm; 44.3 cm
the first carved and painted wood with glass eyes, depicting a seated figure with open book, the head and chin bobbing, the second painted metal, dressed in coat and breeches with phylacteries and prayer shawl, weighted to move in prayer.

Condition

the first with distressing and paint losses, the second with minor rust and paint losses, probably originally held a book

Catalogue Note

A related carved wooden figure, in the dress of a rabbi with open book and bobbing mouth, was shown in Monumenta Judaica: 2000 Jahre Geschicte und Kulture der Juden am Rhein (Cologne, Stadtmuseum, 1963), no. 384, fig. 46.  That example was dated to the 18th century, and the entry noted that the type originated in the Rhön mountains of central Germany.
