Condition

Overall in good original condition. The wool is original and shows surface dirt, natural discoloration, light matting, and some areas of compression to the wool from age and gentle use. The wool at the head and around the ears is pulling away from the metal elements, as it appears the glue has aged and lost some of its adhesive qualities. With some minor irregularities in the woolen surface at the edges as a result where some of the under wool is visible. With some similar under wool evident along the neck joint. The legs of the sheep with minor surface discoloration from age. The castors move with ease. The bronze head of sheep with a wonderful patination acquired from age. The edge of the bronze head with scattered discoloration and oxidation likely from glue residue from the original glue application. This sheep would benefit from some minor stabilization of the wool around the sheep’s head. There is a minor area of red staining to the proper left side of the sheep’s body as seen in the catalogue illustration, measuring 4 x 1 inch. A very good original condition example of this wonderful sculptural form.

Catalogue Note

“They’re not furniture, they’re not sculpture – just call them Lalannes” wrote  Gloria Emerson from the New York Times as she sought to describe Lalannes’ art.  Whether a cabbage body with chicken feet, a giant rhinoceros writing desk, or a flock of sheep, the Lalannes continue to stun, tease, humor, and captivate their audiences. The present lot acquired, from the artists in 1986, represents an early example of the model that has remained with the original collectors.
