Green Dream is a representative painting by Chen Yanning. Art critic Dennis Wepman once commented on his art, “Reminiscent of the old masters, his portraits are suffused with a dazzling aura of light. Chen uses a complex technique and meticulous attention to detail to create masterful compositions that seem to seize a natural moment in the lives of his subjects for portraiture.”
In this work, although wearing a traditional Chinese outfit, the girl’s face and gesture are imbued with an innocent charm. The artist’s brushstrokes capture a moment when the girl is unpretentiously playing with her earring, creating a strong sense of movement. The embroidered shoe and skirt and the flowers balance the greenish and blue hues of the painting, as well as highlight the girl’s pinkish skin tone. In terms of composition, Chen deftly places the hanging plant and orchids in the foreground while applying a dark shade in the background, creating a dream-like and surreal air, as the title of the painting suggests, with the young girl whose beauty transcends time.
