Catalogue Note

In 1564, in his first foray into cartographic publishing, Abraham Ortelius produced a "magnificent eight-sheet world map" (Shirley) on a cordiform projection, printed by de Jode. In 1571, de Jode published a single-sheet version, which is the only version of that landmark map available to the modern collector.

While the sequence of states of this map are unclear, this appears to be state 3, with the title as above, containing the privilege, but before the addition of the names of the oceans within the map. Examples of this state were sold separately and included in the first edition of the Speculum Orbis Terrarum (as this example, with Latin text on the verso). Although an important atlas, it was overshadowed by Ortelius' rival Theatrum, and even examples of the individual maps from the 1578 Speculum are rare.
