Catalogue Note

Thought to be a cartoon for Punch magazine (appearance untraced). As noted in the Dictionary of National Biography (Smith, Elder and Co., 1901), 'Whitby was to become in later years a special haunt of du Maurier, and its ways and doings to appear in delightful fashion in Punch.'

An unfinished pencil sketch of two rowers in a boat features on the reverse of the ink drawing.
