  • POINTING HANDS
  • Photo lithograph
an uncut sheet of die-cut chromolithograph Pointing Hands, mounted on paper, framed, the Buhl Collection label on the reverse, early 1900s

Provenance

Gary Edwards Photographs, Washington, D. C., 1996

Condition

The hands are connected by slender bands, which would have been trimmed away before use. Here, we have the whole sheet of die-cut chromoalithograph hands, as issued by the publisher, and presenting, to modern eyes, a fascinating "collage" of pointing hands. The hands are printed upon thick stock with a glossy surface. Close examination reveals the printed text, appearing twice: "printed in Germany." The hands are in generally fine condition, and the colors are seemingly unfaded. One or two of the connective bands of paper are torn, but this does not realy undermine the set in any noticeable way. The set is mounted to a sheet of buff-colored paper, which is a little worn at the periphery with a few minor tears. There is a water stain in the lower right mount corner which has not affected the prints.
