Description

  • Silver and champlevé enamel
  • width: 40cm, 15 3/4 in.
realistically cast as a double barrel with divided interior, the raised hoops of polychrome geometric enamel centring a later presentation plaque modelled as a cloth overlay and inscribed from a consortium of Russian civil engineers to their French colleagues and dated 1889, the top with two shives linked by chains to the central finial, the ends with enamelled drinking inscription 'The barrel overflows with wine while the owner's head with wit,' within strapwork and geometric borders, the taps formed of cast horse heads below dugas functioning as serving levers, the stillage formed of crossed squared legs joined by a baluster support, 88 standard 

Condition

Excellent condition, the champlevé bands circuling the cask are loose, one side with tiny enamel losses, barely perceptible just below the spout. Very good weight and beautifully made
