Condition

Very good overall condition. Very fine and crisp cast with warm brown patina and good details. Better than on the photography. The belt fixing the gun to the hunter's back appears to be reattached. Very minor wear to the patina at several places consistent with age and handling. On the back side a few spots of dark brown patina. To his right leg and on the saddle, some remains of verde gris. Very attractive and good bronze.

Catalogue Note

Cette noble et romantique image d'un homme d'une tribu de la région des montagnes de l'Afrique du Nord, retournant au village avec ses chiens, tenant un agneau rescapé dans son bras droit et brandissant la tête d'un prédateur. Né à Memel, dans l'Est de la Prusse (actuellement Klaipeda en Lituanie), Max Arthur Waagen, comme nombre d'artistes allemands a quitté son pays pour faire carrière à l'étranger. Il s'installa à Paris, créa de nombreuses oeuvres avec exclusivement des titres français et fontes parisiennes. Les livrets de Salons révèlent qu'il y a exposé entre 1861 et 1887 et que son atelier était situé au 40 Cours de Vincennes puis au 11 Avenue Chevalier.
