In November 1896 Lautrec visited the châteaux of the Loire with his friends Maurice Guilbert, Maurice Joyant, Gabriel Tapié de Céleyran and the latter's girl friend.  While at Blois they discussed Marie de' Medici's escape from her son Louis XIII.  The next month Lautrec gave a dinner party to celebrate the excursion and transformed the story to serve as a menu for the occasion.  He cast Guibert as Marie's rescuer and Tapié de Céleyran's girl friend as Marie, while Tapié is the monster at the upper edge and Joyant is the crocodile.  Lautrec, ever the observer, is seated on a stool sketching the episode.

This lithograph is extremely rare.  This is one of only three impressions of the first state, while an additional five impressions of the second state, with the lettering for the menu, are recorded.  Two impressions of the third state, which shows only the figure of Lautrec, are also known.
