Condition

The sight area in very good condition. Very light superficial scratching, with light traces of oxydation mainly along the right edge, in the lower right corner and at the left edge towards the top. Some light foxing mainly in the lower left corner, in the lower portion of the image and near the upper left edge. The piece has been newly mounted recently.

Catalogue Note

Les premières images connues de derviches sont probablement les épreuves sur papier salé de James Robertson datant du début des années 1850. Alors que les photographies décoratives de derviches prises après 1850 sont nombreuses, sur daguerréotype ce sujet est d'une rareté extrême. Il est possible que Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey ait pris des daguerréotypes de scènes de rue et de figures, y compris de derviches, vers 1843, mais on ne sait pas si ceux-ci subsistent.
Ce merveilleux petit objet montre un portrait en pied d'un derviche de l'ordre Mevlevi pris dans l'Empire Ottoman durant les années 1840.
