The print is in very good to excellent condition. It has a warm tonality and a semi-glossy surface. With a small slightly discoloured spot in the centre of the print, a tiny chip of approx. 1 mm at the lower edge at right and a tiny loss of approx 2 mm in the gelatin layer at the right edge near the lower corner. There are some very light traces of scratches mainly in the upper left quandrant. With a very light handling fold at the lower edge at the centre. Towards its centre, the print is slightly wavy due to the way it is mounted on the card. The card bears some traces of waterstains at the lower left edge, with very light random foxing, and is slightly yellowed along the edges.

Réalisé dans un format exceptionnellement grand et particulièrement rare, ce tirage réunit toutes les caractéristiques stylistiques de la période parisienne d’André Kertész.
Arrivé fin 1925 dans la capitale française, Kertész expérimente la perspective et rajoute à son répertoire des points de vue plus audacieux, avec une prédilection pour des vues en plongée. La photographie présentée ici illustre sa fascination pour les représentations éphémères, soit l’exploration de l’ombre et les mutations, altérations, transformations ou dédoublements qui en découlent. Il explore les axes de la perspective ainsi que les croisements et les parallèles de lignes obliques, dont témoignent aussi les œuvres Chaises Fontaine Médicis, 1926 ou Ombre de la Tour Eiffel, 1929. Enfin, il associe les hommes à des figures anonymes, aperçues au loin, qui donnent pourtant signe de vie au milieu de ce filet d’ombre.
Le montage de ce tirage est typique des années parisiennes et, en raison de son format remarquable, suppose avoir été réalisé dans le cadre d’une exposition. Une seconde photographie du même sujet, réalisée dans un autre format et titrée ou annotée Traveaux [sic !] des Cables, a été conservée dans les archives de la succession d’André Kertész.
