Weishaupt & Söhne, le bord numéroté: 3618

inset with a portrait miniature of Alexander II, Tsar of all the Russias, by Alois Gustav Rockstuhl, signed: Rokstul in cyrillic, within a graduated diamond frame, the ground worked in high relief with Virginia creeper and applied with six further collet-set diamonds, the sides and base engraved with fruiting vines, apparently unmarked but probably by C.M. Weishaupt & Söhne, the rim numbered: 3618

Condition

small dent on rear base rim, otherwise excellent condition. Would benefit from professional cleaning.

Catalogue Note

Alois Gustav Rockstuhl (1798-1877), son of the portrait miniaturist Peter Ernst Rockstuhl studied at the Academy of St Petersburg, of which he was appointed member in 1840. In 1843 he was appointed miniaturist to the Imperial family and from then on worked almost exclusively for them. In this portrait, Tsar Alexander II is seen wearing uniform and orders including the pale blue sash and star of the Order of St Andrew, the star of the Order of St Nicholas, the badge of the Military Order of St George among other medals and orders.


Alois Gustav Rockstuhl (1798-1877), était le fils du miniaturiste Peter Ernst Rockstuhl. Il étudia à l'Académie de St Petersbourg, dont il fut nommé membre en 1840. En 1843, il fut nommé miniaturiste de la famille impériale pour qui il travailla presque exclusivement. Sur ce portrait, le Tsar Alexandre II porte l'uniforme et les ordres militaires notamment celui de l'Ordre de St André, de l'Ordre de St Nicolas et du l'Ordre de St George.
