The canvas has a very thin old relining which has not negatively affected the paint surface. Shining a light through the painting from the verso confirms the thinness of the canvas as the light is clearly visible. Upper right a small swell in the paint surface is present (from a weight against it in the past?) with a small corresponding paint loss. The canvas has been folded to the lateral edges by 1.5-2 cm and so very slightly reduced. However, there does not appear to have been a reduction in the overall design. To the naked eye the painting looks in very dirty but good condition, with the voluminous paint well preserved. A few scattered areas of losses and retouching can be made out, for example under the ear, as well as some cracks in the paint surface, for example in the loin cloth, as well as above the head. A surface scuff can be seen above the head. Inspection under UV light confirms the above and points to some further areas of retouching such as lower left and scattered around lower and centre right, and upper right and left. Offered in a period frame in good condition with a slip to the right and left of the painting. The painting will greatly benefit from a clean.
