Description

  • Jan Miense Molenaer
  • A village street with villagers gathered around two figures proclaiming news, standing on barrels outside an inn
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has a firm relining. The paint surface is secure although somewhat flattened by the aforementioned relining and under a dirty, old, yellowed varnish. There is an old restored damage of approx. 4 cm squared lower right in the barrel. Some strengthening work to the figures in the foreground is visible to the naked eye as is some old retouching to the lines of the craquelure in the sky. Although thorough inspection under UV light the aforementioned work does fluoresce as does retouching work along the left hand margin and on the right in the roof of the inn. Offered in gilt wood and plaster frame with some losses.
