  • Pieter Neefs the Elder
  • Interior of a gothic cathedral with figures promenading in the aisle
  • signed upper right: DEN AVDEN NEEffS
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

With Symons and Son auctioneers, Barnstaple, lot 103 (according to a label on the reverse);
With Amell's, Stockholm;
Acquired from the above by the present owner in 1980.

Condition

The signed canvas has a relining which is a little tight. To the naked eye the painting appears in good condition with no major damages though it is perhaps a little thin in the background. Inspection under UV light reveals some old restoration, probably of a tear, at centre and some scattered retouchings to add definition. Offered in a reproduction Dutch rippled frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Several of the figures, and the centremost dog, appear to have been added by a different hand at a slightly later date.
