Condition

The tone of the original is a touch less pink than it appears in the catalogue illustration. This painting has been recently restored. The canvas has an old glue lining, although the stretcher is more recent. The paint layer has been cleaned and varnished but the conspicuous absence of any retouches of any note is a clear indication that this work is in very good condition. None of the details in the naval vessels or in any of the details in the foreground area abraded and there are only a few tiny retouches in the sky and along the upper frame margin. Offered in a stained wooden Northern style frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Marijke C. de Kinkelder of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie, The Hague, for confirming the attribution to Storck on the basis of a photograph.  She dates the picture to the 1690s. The harbour depicted may be that of Hellevoetsluis.
