Description

  • Matthijs Naiveu
  • An elegant lady seated in an interior receiving a letter from a footman
  • signed and dated lower right: M. Naiveu Pinxit/ 1687
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

With Wilhelm Smolka, Vienna, from whom acquired by the present collector in 1980 for 250,000 schillings.

Condition

The canvas has been relined, which has somewhat flattened the paint surface, which is otherwise secure and generally in good condition under a degraded, matt varnish. The aforementioned varnish makes the canvas difficult to read under UV light although some minor scattered retouchings do fluoresce in the darker areas. Offered in a stained wooden northern style frame in good condition.
