Description

  • Pieter Gysels
  • A river landscape with figures unloading their boats beside a village
  • oil on copper

Provenance

Madame de Sinety, Rue Salle l'Evêque, possibly in Montepellier (according to an old inscription on the reverse).

Condition

The copper support is very slightly uneven but stable and laid onto an old wooden cradle. The paint surface appears to be in very good order throughout with no signs of major damage or wear. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a number of old repairs; these are chiefly concentrated on the right hand margin of the picture, especially in the water and to details of the river bank and tree trunks in the centre. There are a series of three small losses of 50 mm or less along the lower edge and a scattering of isolated local retouchings on the left horizon and in the sky. The lower left hand corner appears a little worn. The great majority of the picture however appears very well preserved indeed with even the smallest original detail intact. The varnish is shiny and a little uneven. This lot is offered with a later giltwood frame with beade and tongue moldings, numerous small chips and losses of gilt.
