Condition

The catalogue illustration is much too dark. The support consists of 2 horizontal oak panels, cradled on the reverse, the join about at half way, running along the top of the mid-distance trees. Overall the condition of the paint surface is fairly good. There is an area of retouchings and strengthenings in the upper centre of the sky, near the margin, some strengthening to some of the tree trunks in the mid-distance, scattered through the left hand foliage, and in the very central foreground; none of these are of much significance however. The painting would however benefit from a new varnish, replacing the present thick, glossy varnish. Sold with a later gilt frame.
