Catalogue Note

One could be forgiven for mistaking this Norwegian landscape for the Saguenay River in Gagnon's beloved lower St. Lawrence region of Quebec, for the majesty, colour and shapes are so reminiscent of the topography there. In fact, no matter where Gagnon painted - be it France or Northern Europe - he dreamt only of Canada. Gagnon wrote: "The motif remains fixed in my mind, and I don't allow myself to be captivated by the charms of a new landscape. In Switzerland, Scandinavia - everywhere, I recall my French Canada."
