Maurice Cullen appreciated the European Impressionists’ approach to depicting change in light and atmosphere, and aimed to capture these effects in his painting; however, he did so with a solidity, a fidelity to nature which was completely individual in its sensibility and strength. The viewpoint on this scene has been carefully considered; the gentle bend of the terrain which opens between the snowbanks on the either side of the river seems to arch toward the spectator, creating the sense that the viewer is not just looking at the landscape, but situated within it.
