The illustration is accurate. Good overall condition despite inevitable scratches, cracks and marks due to age and use. Both constructions are firm and sound. On the first armchair, the back feet ends have been cut and restored. On the front rail of this armchair, the small chips were restored and made up with wax. The chassis of the seat has been reinforced with additional metal brackets. The back feet ends of the other armchair have been replaced. The back leg (right) has been restored: small part of the leg has been replaced and carved. The chassis of the seat is also reinforced with metal brackets. The back has been restored on the junction between the seat and the back. On the reverse of both backrests, traces of little holes (from previous upholstery) which have been filed in. Old traces of woodworms, especially at the back rail of the seats. The upholstery is modern with traces of wear. Very unusual proportions, historical provenance.

A la suite de l'acquisition du château de Chanteloup en 1786 par le duc de Penthièvre, l'inspecteur général des maisons du prince, Martin Vallet, dressa un inventaire du mobilier présent dans la demeure, comme il l'avait fait pour les autres résidences du duc : les initiales CP (pour Chanteloup) furent alors apposées, séparées par une ancre rappelant les fonctions de Grand Amiral du duc de Penthièvre et surmontée d'une couronne princière.

La plupart du mobilier provenait du propriétaire précédent, le duc de Choiseul. Ce dernier, lorsqu'il avait acquis Chanteloup en 1761, avait également racheté au vendeur d'alors, la fille de Jean Bouteroue d'Aubigny, le mobilier déjà en place, estimé 40 000 livres.

Compte tenu du style de ces marquises, il n'est donc pas exclu qu'elles datent de l'ameublement de Chanteloup sous d'Aubigny, propriétaire du domaine dès 1708. Mais elles peuvent également provenir d'une autre résidence du duc de Penthièvre, comme Sceaux ou Châteuneuf dont on sait que certains sièges furent envoyés à Chanteloup à la fin de la décennie 1780.
