In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. Illustrations in the catalogue may not be actual size. Prospective purchasers are reminded that, unless the catalogue description specifically states that a stone is natural, we have assumed that some form of treatment may have been used and that such treatment may not be permanent. Our presale estimates reflect this assumption.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
Catalogue Note
I.J. Asscher Diamond Company, founded by Joseph Isaac Asscher in 1854, was a highly regarded firm in Amsterdam that specialized in cutting many large historical diamonds such as the Excelsior and Cullinan. Following the establishment of the company, Joseph Asscher advanced his family’s reputation for skill and innovation by developing the “Asscher-cut” in 1902. This elegant and alluring cut can be characterized as a square or near square emerald-cut, a form that has gained international appeal. This emblematic cut, which reached its peak of popularity in the 1920s, became the first to be patented for its original design with the company holding protection until the Second World War.
The present diamond ring by Tiffany & Co. is an excellent representation of an Asscher cut with its prominent corners, high crown and relatively small table facet. This 7.46 carat diamond ring distinguishes itself by its charm, sophistication and elegant subtlety, creating a sense of timelessness that transcends the nature of the stone.
