Description

  • Suzanne Belperron
  • gold, diamond, emerald, ring
Of crossover design set with large rose-cut diamonds, accented by round emeralds, size 5½.

Condition

The mounting with nicking and scratching commensurate with regular wear; eye-visible porosity along the sides of the shank. Evidence of sizing. The rose-cut diamonds are approximately G-I color, SI clarity. The medium to medium-deep green emeralds are moderately to heavily included. Unsigned, but authorship confirmed by Ward Landrigan. Bearing a nice weight and wonderfully sculptural. We would like to thank Olivier Baroin for confirming the provenance of this piece.

Catalogue Note

Formerly from the Collection of Jane Englehard who went to Madame Belperron with her friend Madame Baker and bought the ring on May 6, 1968.

A ring of similar design set with only diamonds is illustrated in a Vogue Paris cover from March 1972, and a sketch is shown on page 299 of Suzanne Belperron, by Sylvie Raulet and Olivier Baroin.

This crossover design is reputed to have been used by Madame Belperron for her engagement ring in 1923.

Exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York in the 'Notorious & Notable' exhibition, September 14, 2010 - January 3, 2011.
