Catalogue Note

Ref. 5029 was launched in 1997 and produced in very limited numbers. Patek Philippe's promotional literature notes that only thirty pieces were created in total, with ten pieces cased in platinum, white and yellow gold, respectively. The understated design of Ref. 5029 belies the complexity of the movement it houses. This model combines the time-honoured tradition of minute-repeating watches with the contemporary desire for self-winding wristwatches. In order to fulfil both of these demands, Patek Philippe designed the cal. R27PS movement, which utilizes an offset rotor to allow space for the minute-repeating gongs. Ensuring the chime's clarity of sound is a significant challenge in the creation of any minute-repeating timepiece. To meet this challenge, Patek Philippe tested a multitude of alloys, finally developing new acoustic steel for the sole purpose of minute-repeating gongs. In the conception of a minute-repeating watch, the case maker must keep the clarity of sound in mind in addition to the numerous technical and aesthetic demands of the craft. The present model achieves an incredibly clear chime within a hinged Officer's-style case, whose cuvette and straight, screw-set lugs recalls some of the first wristwatches produced by the firm. The case of the present Ref. 5029 was made by the celebrated Jean-Pierre Hagmann, whose case maker's mark, JHP, is stamped on the inside of the hinged case back.
