Catalogue Note

The finely painted enamel scene on the case of the present lot is after the painting, 'Springtime', by Pierre-Auguste Cot from 1873.  This idyllic Arcadian painting depicts the flirtation between two young lovers and is one of Cot's most recognized works.  It was originally exhibited at the Salon of 1873 in Paris, where it was bought by John Wolfe.  The piece currently hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
