Catalogue Note

With an Extract from the Archives confirming sale on October 14th, 1965. Together with a fitted box.

In March 1962, four years after its initial launch, Ref. 2597 HS was updated to include an additional hour hand, which was forged in blued steel to stand out from the gold dauphine home time hands. This version of the 'Heures Sautantes' model enabled two time zones to be indicated at the same time.

It is estimated that three-handed models made up only one-tenth of Ref. 2597's already limited production run of approximately 100 pieces in total. The present lot is being offered for the first time at auction by the family of the original owner, and according to our research has never been offered at auction before.

It is fascinating to note that movement number 729427, one digit earlier than the present lot, is illustrated in
Huber, M., and Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, First Edition, pp. 183. The text notes that this example was kept for the museum, making the present lot of immeasurable significance for collectors.

The inspiration for Patek Philippe's modern travel time wristwatches are clearly drawn from the original Ref. 2597 HS and still feature an independently adjustable jumping hour hand. For an illustration of the concept's longevity, see lots 106 and 191, modern travel time wristwatches from the firm with remarkably similar designs.

For further history on Ref. 2597 and Louis Cottier, see the previous two lots.
