Condition

Structural Condition The artist's panel is stable and is providing an even and secure structural support. The reverse of the panel shows some minor wear from previous framing arrangements but is entirely stable. Paint surface The paint surface has an even varnish layer. There are some minor abrasions to the four corners and the framing edges but these are concealed when the painting is in its frame. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows some scattered retouchings, the most significant of which are fine lines to the upper left vertical framing edge and to the centre and right of the upper horizontal framing edge. These appear to correspond to abrasions caused by the frame rebate. There are also some very minor retouchings below and to the left of the signature, a thin vertical line below the trunk of the tree on the left of the composition, some very fine spots above the figures in the centre and some very small spots close to the lower horizontal framing edge. Summary The painting therefore appears to be in very good and stable condition and no further work is required.
