Catalogue Note

Several versions of the present composition exist and its ultimate origin has been the subject of scholarly debate. A version with slight variations was sold New York, Christie's, 25 May, 1999, lot 153 for $101,500 (as by Nicolaes van Veerendael). Fred Meijer believes that this particular composition is based on a lost original by Jan Davidsz. de Heem.
