Provenance

Lieut-General Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt Rivers, after 1880;

Condition

This canvas has an old relining. Overall the painting has good tonality and high retention of original paint. A slightly discolored varnish covers the portrait. Some scattered retouches are visible under UV light. These are below the varnish by seem generally minor. One on the forehead and one on the lips of the sitter are slightly larger than the others. A couple small white flecks sit on top the paint layer but these should be easily removed. The picture could benefit from a light cleaning and adjustment of the minor retouches. Overall though, presents a strong image. In a carved wood frame.

Once in the collection of the famed archaeologist, Lieutenant-General Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt Rivers, this enigmatic portrait displays Sustris' characteristically light handling and imperceptible brushstrokes.
