Catalogue Note

The present table is identical to a table from Knoppogue Castle, Co. Clare, Ireland, which sold HOK Fine Art, April 20, 1993.  (illustrated, Glin and Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven and London, 2007, p. 222, no. 68).  Glin and Peill remark that 'This table is almost certainly by the same cabinet-maker as that in the Ulster Museum' (op. cit., p. 64, no. 69).  The frieze of the Knoppogue Castle table is much deeper than the present table and also has a wood top which explains the appearance of a shallow frieze to the present table.  The design of these tables especially with the use of the panelled lower legs is influenced by earlier designs seen on gilt-gesso tables and in designs published by William Jones in his The Gentleman and Builder's Companion, 1739, pl. 30.
